Redefining Refugee Support: The Fire Retardant Family Tent by NTH

Fire Retardant Family Tent by NTH

National Tent House (NTH) is a trusted manufacturer of relief products for over 50 years, supplying renowned humanitarian aid agencies such as UNHCR, ICRC, IFRC, IOM, MSF, USAID, Qatar Aid, and UK Aid. Over the decades, our dedicated R&D team has developed a wide range of high-standard products, including tents, blankets, semi-collapsible jerry cans, and water buckets, all designed to serve critical purposes in disaster relief. Among our many innovations, the development of Fire Retardant Family Tents stands out as a significant breakthrough. Compliant with UNHCR standards, this tent is designed for a family of five, offering exceptional quality, suitability for all climates, and ease of setup—making it the preferred choice for governments and NGOs during crises

Key Features of the NTH Family Tent

Fire Retardancy and Safety

  • Flame Resistance (EN 13823, CPAI84): NTH’s advanced FR treatment on the fabric ensures it resists ignition and self-extinguishes within 10 seconds of flame exposure. At NTH, we prioritize fire safety as essential for refugees, making this tent a benchmark in safety for organisations working in humanitarian aid sector. This feature is especially important in densely populated refugee camps, where cooking activities, the use of open flames for warmth, and the proximity of tents, increase the risk of fire.

Fabric

  • Fabric Composition: Made from a premium poly-cotton blend this material combines durability and breathability, ensuring long-lasting performance and interior comfort.
  • Tensile Strength (ISO 13934-1): Withstands pulling forces of 850 N minimum (equivalent to 85KG) for the roof and 650 N minimum (equivalent to 65KG) for the walls.
Real-world relevance? This ensures the fabric can handle the stress of high winds, tight setups, and frequent use without tearing.
  • Tear Resistance (ISO 9073-4): With a resistance of 60 N (equivalent to 6KG)  for the roof and 40 N (equivalent to 4) for the walls, minor punctures or snags won’t compromise the tent’s integrity.
  • UV Resistance (ISO 4892-2) : Retains 70% of its tensile strength after 360 hours of exposure, ensuring longevity under harsh sunlight.
  • Resistance to Micro-Organisms: Withstands mold and mildew, maintaining strength even after prolonged exposure to damp environments.
  • Water Vapor Permeability (ISO 17229): Ensures excellent ventilation, with a minimum of 2000 g/m²/24h, reducing condensation and keeping the interior dry, reducing odor and ensuring a more comfortable sleeping environment.

Weather Protection

  • Water Penetration Resistance (ISO 811): The tent is tested by applying water pressure at an increasing speed of 100mm per minute to check water penetration resistance (minimum
30 hPa for the roof & 20 hPa for walls and groundsheet), ensuring no leaks during light rain or heavy flooding.
  • Rain Penetration Resistance (ISO 5912): The tent is able to withstand prolonged exposure to rain without leaking. According to ISO 5912, the tent undergoes a rigorous test where water is applied at increasing pressure on one end for 2 hours and on one side for 3 hours. This simulates heavy, consistent rainfall to verify that the tent remains waterproof under such conditions, ensuring reliable protection in real-world rainy environments.
  • Bathtub Ground Sheet: The ground sheet (floor) is made of woven PE fabric sewn to the inner tent and extends up the sides of the wall, preventing water ingress even in wet or muddy conditions.

Spacious Design and Comfort

  • Partition and Vestibules: Features an internal partition for privacy and two vestibules for additional storage, keeping the living area tidy.
  • Mosquito Nets: Two nets are placed on the doors ensuring comfortable environment inside the tent.
  • Chimney Compatibility: Includes a reinforced chimney opening, suitable for safe stove use during cold-weather.
  • Ventilation System: Large windows and triangular vents promote airflow, reducing humidity and keeping the tent cool and dry.
  • Winterization Kit: A specific winterization kit is designed which is compatible with Family Tent to survive extreme temperatures. For details: https://nationaltenthouse.com/winterization-kit-unhcr-ifrc-icrc-standard/

Strong Structure and Easy Setup

  • Guy Ropes, Pegs, and Poles: Equipped with durable, UV-treated guy ropes, galvanized steel poles, and strong pegs, ensuring stability even in winds up to 75 km/h and snow loads of 300 N/m².
  • Repair Kit: Comes with a repair kit for minor damages, extending the tent’s life.
  • Quick Setup: Can be pitched in 20 minutes, making it practical and user-friendly.
