The South Sudan refugee crisis is one of the largest refugee crises in Africa and the third-largest globally. South Sudan, the world’s youngest nation has faced ongoing conflicts, economic instability and natural disasters since its independence in 2011, resulting in widespread suffering among its population. Due to the civil war of 2013, nearly 2.32 million people have fled to neighboring countries, and 2.22 million remain internally displaced in South Sudan.
Due to the large refugee population, the conditions are getting worse as they lack basic necessities to survive. According to the 2024 UN Humanitarian Needs Overview for South Sudan, an estimated 9 million people—73 percent of the country’s population—will need humanitarian assistance during 2024.
